Making a Template for Laser Engraved Pet Tags

Since I don’t have a fancy laser where I can center the images with a camera, I am going to need to make a template so I can engrave more than one of these at a time.

To make a template, you simply need to measure out what you want to engrave, simple shapes like these are easiest, then cut it out of an easily accessible material like this cardboard!

I hold the cardboard in place with these honeycomb pegs, which I also have a download for.

You can also tape it. We just want to make sure we don’t move this around in between engravings.

Poke out the cut out circles and your template is ready!

How to Laser Engrave Anodized Metal

Now that the template is ready to go, let’s engrave these suckers!

Make sure you’re laser head is focused on the tags and not the cardboard. If you use thinner carboard, that would be easier. You’ll want to hone in your settings with some good ol’ trial and error.

The trick really is just figuring out what works best for you! These come in a bunch of colors, so consider the contrast of the exposed aluminum underneath with the color of the tag.

To get them out, I just use a bit of masking tape and pull them out. You can then flip them over or they are ready to incorporate into other projects or sell them as they are!

How to Add Color to Metal Laser Engravings

If the engraving is too light for your liking, try this.

Cover your piece with masking tape and then engrave it. Leaving the masking on there, go over it with some light coats of spray paint.

Once dry, remove the masking. This might work better with larger designs than the one I tried. You will want to do a clear coat on top so your paint doesn’t scratch off too easily.

You can also try to use marker paints to add color to masked off engraved areas!

We can also do the opposite of this!

If you have too light of a surface, or even a bare piece of metal, then give it a good cleaning, maybe even a sanding, and spray paint the entire piece!

After your paint is dry, now you can engrave it to reveal the metal underneath!

Consider This

There really is a whole lot you can do with these cheap metal tags, or all those other anodized metal products out there. I once sold a set of engraved zippo styled lighters for a groomsmen gift and made over a 300% profit.

These types products are great for a quick sell! No need for layers upon layers of laser cut materials to mess around with. You only need to know how to customize them for your customers.

Happy Crafting!
