Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take a laser TO a craft show and laser things right before your customers eyes!? Well, WeCreat sent me their brand new 10-Watt Diode and 3-Watt IR Laser called the Lumos to do just that! But here’s the thing, I only have 7 days to figure out how to set this up, what products to sell and how to make this a memorable experience for my customers. Let’s do this!

What Can the WeCreat Lumos Even Do?

This little fella can do everything a 10-watt diode and 3-watt IR can do!

Wait – 3-watt Infrared? Yup! Just one more watt gets better results not only faster, but deeper. And there is no need to switch laser heads! They are both inside this mini magical machine!

It still uses the WeCreat MakeIt! Program, just like the Vista and Vision series lasers use, so lucky for me, I don’t need to learn a new program!

Switching from the red and blue lights are as easy as hitting a button!

It’s very intuitive and it’s my favorite thing! Mostly because I don’t use Lightburn, but this machine could if that’s more your jam!

There is a rotary attachment and extension bed add-on, but we are going to keep it simple!

I am focusing on small little products people can quickly customize. Let’s do a few tests and see what this baby can do!

In the MakeIt! Program, I did a few test pieces and was absolutely floored by how friggin fast this thing is! This will be good in case we get busy this weekend.

I am so glad it came with some trial pieces that were on theme for the cat convention this weekend. I think people can wait less than 30 seconds for a pet tag! They are definitely going on the list of things to sell!

This vegan-leather bag took about 2 minutes to engrave, which isn’t bad! Maybe if some things take a couple minutes to engrave, it will give me time to talk about my other things for sale and see if I can do a little upselling!

I also dinked around with an anodized aluminum business card and badge pull thing. A lot of what I was trying to do was nail down settings and timing.

Now I just need to make a list of other things I can make and order in some stock!

What Happened When I Took a Laser TO a Cat Convention

We made it! But no matter how many lists I wrote and how many times I double checked those lists, I forgot something!

I made these cat grass planters with the Lumos’s sister laser, the WeCreat Vista.

And I even made a little sign for them, and I totally forgot it! I always have some cardstock and markers for things like this, but it was a really nice sign.

Then, I looked at this space age orange and purple laser looking back at me. DUH! I can freaking make another one!

I didn’t bring wood to cut, but I did have an extra bamboo saucer. Perfect!

I have my son design some text and we put the machine to the test! I was curious how the fume box was going to hold up, too. I ended up painting it purple! Very fancy!

I home-made a fume box extractor with a hepa filter, 3″ vent flange and electronics fan! It cost less than $30 because I put it all on a cardboard box I had. It worked great! Not perfect, but great on a budget!

The fumes were just a hint of sweet bamboo. A neighbor vendor complimented it, even!

The only smells that escaped were from engraving wood pieces, which having litter boxes for the kitties at a cat convention actually made my booth a draw! But, more on that later.

I put the sign by the cat grass and was so relieved. I just had a little more setting up to do, and it was show time!

This cat convention is more than just cat-themed. There were adoptions going on, as well as educational elements for owners. People even brought their pet cats to enjoy the fun! But how did the laser do? And how many products did we screw up?

First, the laser was a hit! I developed a repeatable phrase pretty quick. For any show I do, I try to tell onlookers that everything is laser cut and made by me, but here was my catch-phrase for the day. “I make all this with a laser and if you wanted to make something with a laser, I brought one! You just pick the item, pick the design and we’ll engrave it right in front of your very eyes!” Corny – yes. Did it work – very yes!

“OOOOoooOooo”, they would say! Every single person, whether they got something or not, said that was a “great idea”, or “that’s so cool”. And EVERYTIME something was lasering in there it would make people stop and come see what was going on.

Now, this show, for whatever reasons, what much slower than the previous years. My neighbor booth person even said she made like a third what she did last year, and I was expecting a bit more of a turnout, but that’s just the name of the game. We prepare for the worst, hope for the best and take what we can. So, I was especially grateful to have had this customer magnet there!
