Step 2: Laser Cutting Your Plant Designs

Once you have your designs, it’s time to laser cut them onto your acrylic sheets. Be sure to follow the specific instructions for your laser cutter model and adjust settings based on the thickness of your acrylic. Safety tip: Always wear proper eye protection when operating a laser cutter.

Step 3: Introducing Heat Shaping

If you’re new to heat shaping acrylic, this project is a great introduction! The thin vine shapes we’ll be working with heat up quickly and bend easily.

Carefully heat the acrylic vines with your heat gun on a low setting, keeping the heat moving to avoid scorching. Once the acrylic reaches a rubbery consistency, use your pliers and clamps (protected with a tea towel) to bend the vines around the lip of the terracotta pot.

Repeat for the remaining vine pieces, allowing them to cool completely between shaping. Use the heat gun again to add subtle curves to the hanging vine ends for a more natural look.

Step 4: Assembling Your Forever Plants

Now for the fun part – decorating your pots! Use hot glue to secure the acrylic vines to the terracotta pots. Once the glue dries, fill the pots with rocks, mulch, or moss for a finished look.

Step 5: Get Creative!

These plants are incredibly versatile. You can customize them with different acrylic colors, create themed designs for holidays, or even use school colors for a unique teacher’s gift! The possibilities are endless.

Additional Tips:

  • Be patient when heat shaping the acrylic. Overheating can cause warping or cracking.
  • Use a variety of colors and textures for your acrylic to create different plant types.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different designs!
