So, iKier has sent me their Master Laser! It is a 50w CO2 laser – which means we can cut all the acrylics we want!

Not just that, but all the other materials, too!

They do have an Infrared laser head attachment, but we are going to skip that for this particular tutorial.

What I am aiming for is to show you why CO2 lasers are the most versatile lasers out there, and show you a few fun features with this here iKier Master laser.

Like the fact the water-cooling system is inside the machine. Very cool.

But I mostly want to show you how to elevate very easy products you can whip out this holiday season, so you can make a boat load of money.

Let me show you how to make an amazing, very affordable (for you and your customers), very fun little gift box.

The best part is – it can be made with anything! The theme could be anything, and the customer base could be anyone. So, no matter your niche or target customer, you can make this!

Little Ornament (that we will make fancy here in a moment)
Little Welcome Sign

But here are some other ingredients you can add or swap out for, depending on what you want in your bundle.

All sorts of stuff really. It’s a build your own gift box adventure!

The one I am going to build is for my new brand – Unhinged Cat Lady. So, cats. I love cats. I love cat people, I am a cat people. And I treat my cats like people, so we’re going full circle!

For my gift box, I am going to go with a Cutting Board, which happened to come with a cheese knife, a magnet set and an ornament. It is for Christmas, after all!

Up to you whether you want to make the designs on these Christmas themed. I am going to go with evergreen designs – so I can continue to sell these together or separately throughout the entire year. Even that ornament! You can put those anywhere you know.

So, let’s start with that ornament!

I am going to start strong right out of the gate – so let’s use some clear acrylic!

First, take off some of the masking on one side and put some dish soap on there. You’ll see why soon. Not too much, not too little.

My Master laser came with a slat bed, but since we are going to be making some smaller things, I am going to use this old honeycomb bed. It’s not a perfect fit, so please forgive me until I can get one that actually fits in this 20″ by 12″ cutting area.

Now I can set this soap covered acrylic on top, and I am going to secure it from moving with a little tape. You usually don’t need to secure your materials, but again – you will see why I did this here in a moment.

Now I just need to center the head on my material and do the autofocus. Easy chessy mcbreezy.

If you want to be able to use your laser better than 99% of everyone else out there with a laser, you better be paying attention! Here’s how to make perfect double-sided engravings, no matter the shape of your project.

I have this fun laser design that I have made, and I know that you are thinking, how are you going to engrave both sides of that squiggly diggily?

Here we are in LightBurn, if you were wondering if the iKier Master can work with LightBurn, the answer is yes!

I have this side of the design, the engrave and cut lines. And I have this opposite side of the design, with the engraving and cut lines.

Now, let’s take a picture of our laser bed with the 16-megapixel camera and get everything in place.

I’m going to now engrave them both and then cut!

Now, I wonder if you are thinking why I am making two of these, the answer is – because my plan is to sell more than one gift box – of course!

You can align these in rows, a top row of side A and a bottom row of side B and make a bunch all at once. The key is to have equal sides of both being cut. When testing products, start on the lower quantity side. The best part about a laser is we can always make things to order in a pinch.

Very nice! The 50w CO2 laser makes this easy, frosty and fast.
But! Before you grab anything, let’s carefully take these out with a little bit of tape.

Now let’s take off the masking on the opposite side of these ornaments, put a touch of dish soap again and trade places!

Now head back into LightBurn and turn off just the cut line, so we just engrave the designs on the other side.

Now while that is engraving, let’s talk a moment about types of acrylic. If you want a perfectly frosty finish to an engraving, especially on a transparent acrylic, you will definitely want CAST acrylic.

The alternative is called extruded acrylic, and that tends to be more melty and shiny – not frosty and ooolala-y.

Bada boom and bada bing!

Now, let’s address the dish soap thing. Simply rinse and – tada! We don’t have to buff the blowback residue off these!

You can engrave through the masking paper, but this is a faster method than to have to weed all that off after engraving.

Isn’t that fun! Sure, I could have made this a circle so we could engrave both sides easier, but this is way more interesting and interesting always equals more money!

But, we’re not selling this by itself!

Let’s engrave the cutting board next! I love the camera and framing, so we can get something perfectly aligned. Don’t forget to use the autofocus!

Now let’s take a look at how we are going to engrave this.

In LightBurn, I have 2 identical images on eachother. One is for engraving and one is for a score line, which is like a low level cut line not meant to cut anything – just outline it.

Engraving and cutting wood makes a lot of smoke, some more than others, which is where the Master’s exhaust fan really comes in handy. It sucks everything out, and I have attached an air pump, so that also helps with the flow.

For me, I exhaust this directly outside. If you are not near a window, you’ll want to upgrade to the air purifier unit.

Gorgeous! Let’s not forget the cheese knife! Just a quick little paw print there!

This is nearly ready. There will be one more step to step up the presentation a bit here after we get the magnets ready!

The magnet set is pretty obvious to make, though I do want to say this – getting pre-finished wood takes a HUGE step out of the process. More time to sell equals more profits, after all!

There are a lot of sources for finished wood, and mdf core wood also.

For these, I won’t outline them with a score line. You could, but I think these are looking ready to party!

Since I don’t have to varnish these, I just need to put the magnets on, boop boop boop.

But wait! There’s more!

These magnets need a little something extra – packaging! What, were we just gonna throw them in a box all willy nilly? No way!

I’m just going to cut a frame for these out of a scrap piece of super cheap mdf. Like buttah, then align the magnets. It’s not a super tight fit, which is ok, because I’m going to slip that into this cellophane bag.

The branding is on point and I think this just gained some serious value.

Now this is a product!

Did you see those hearts I cut out of the magnet holes! Let’s not forget about those!

Every scrap is a chance to make something else! I cut out these hearts to give a little more razzle dazzle to the cutting board. With some cheap twine, I tie the cheese knife on there, add a little heart and bam!

Time to change into your fancy pants!

Pricing Breakdown

Ok – quick psychological pricing outlook for you.

These small cutting boards, and cheese knife set, cost me about $4.

These magnets cost me maybe a whole dollar for all three, plus a little for the mdf backing card.

This ornament – which is a generic – non-personalized – design, can be made in batches and only cost me about $1 in acrylic and 10 cents in ribbon.

So, without having a giant pricing conversation about overhead and all that, the materials to make all this was only about $7.

Let’s grab this box, just a cheap cardboard box, and let’s do a little razzmatazz.
Using that score line, to save time, let’s just score a fun little cat-tastic image on there with a from and to section for people to write in.

Awesome.

Now a little tissue, maybe a bow, and viola! Let’s bump the cost to produce all of these things to, heck let’s round it all the way up to $10!

I know my customers are going to be super impressed! So, what should we charge?

It’s hard to shake our OWN bargain shopper beliefs but consider the fact your customer is not you. They are not a maker with a laser. They are looking for a quality gift that will be a perfect fit for the person they are giving this gift to!

For me, I think I’ll make a few of these and bring them to my next market and try them at… at least $40. Probably going to start at $48, actually.
