Before I became Laser Lady, I worked in lots of restaurants. And you know the one thing restaurants are good at? Not wasting a single thing.
Meat leftover at the end of the day gets turned into soup. Bread gets turned into croutons, and day old rice gets made into fried rice.

So why are you throwing away your scraps?

I’ve got one more big market this year, so it’s scrap processing day here in Laser Lady land! Let’s use up these little bits and make some purely profitable products!

Let’s dive in!

Here are the rules. Scraps only.

I pre cut nothing new, I only pull from cutoffs I already paid for.

The types of products I plan on making are PERFECT for in person shows! They aren’t meant to become evergreen products, because you never know exactly what they will end up being made of.

Here’s another thing, and you’ve probably heard this from other people – this has been a weird year for selling.

The shows that used to do well, are lackluster at best.

But I have noticed something in the 12 shows I’ve done so far this year – people are still buying small, cheap impulse buys.

The easy to justify, or at least easy to pick up and go: $3-20 finds – which is perfect for what we are doing today!

Project 1: DIY Mini Ornament Kits

Since it’s nearly Christmastime, I’m making small 2 inch ornaments. But there’s a catch!

I’m not even going to complete these. We’re gonna make DIY kits.

This is also where having a 50w laser really comes in handy! I am not limited on any kind of material.

I’ll be trying to use up as much acrylic and wood sheets as I can!

So here’s the plan! First, let’s cut out a bunch of the backgrounds.

These are just about 2″, circle ornament shaped with a nice big hole at the top that will be easy to feed some string through.

Since I’ll be using so many different materials, the iKier Masters autofocus makes focusing and cutting perfectly through each material – easy.

Solid colors look pretty good, but what makes this 50w CO2 iKier Master a handy creative business tool is that I can also cut clear acrylics! Mirrored acrylics, glitter acrylics and more!

I also have a lot of these cut off pieces from my other laser that doesn’t have as big of a laser bed. Finally, I can use some of these up!

They look pretty small in the iKier Master! This laser has a 20″ x 12″ bed, so I don’t need to cut down materials like this anymore!

Ok, we’re starting to get quite a selection of back pieces made now.

This is exactly why these little DIY kits are perfect for in person shows. There’s no telling what scrap materials I’ve got to use up.

Now for the top layer. To make this the easiest – and kid friendly – DIY ornament kit around, I am going to put a little bit of this 3M double sided sticky paper on the scraps that will be the top layer.

Like here. Just a little bit cut to fit, and I use a putty knife to get it stuck on there permanently.

Not only can this CO2 laser cut various acrylic, but it can slice right through this too!

Now when the customer goes to make their ornament, they just peel this off and stick it on the background of their choice!

This double-sided sticky paper also works with wood, just like this laser!

I just need equal parts in fun mixes of colors, then we go to package them up!
I always think packaging just adds so much to a product!

And there you have it! You can sell these for as much as you like because the profit is nearly 100%.

What we want to be paid for is pretty much just the time it takes to make, which is fast when you are working with the iKier Master!

Project 2: Magnet Sets

This entire year of selling at in person shows, little cheap quick grabs go fast. As much as I’d love for everyone to buy my most expensive things, this is just the reality of this year – so let’s go all in!

Magnets have been going like crazy, but at my last show, I tried a couple of magnet sets. The exact ones I made in my last iKier video, in fact!

I took those to a show here in town and they sold out. My single magnets did great, but those magnet sets ran out of my booth.

Plus, they are wicked fast to make.

I find that cute or funny images with a silly phrase are what makes the sale. The customer reads it, give a chuckle, picks it up and buys it.

Humor never goes out of style!

And, we are not limited to wood here!

Here’s a little solid acrylic trick. First, make sure your material is nice and secure.

The iKier Master comes with a slat bed, but I added this honeycomb bed to help keep all my little bits together, I ‘ll use some laser cut pegs to hold this material in place.

Next, set your design to only engrave.

Now once that is done, move the laser head aside and go in with your paint. I’ll use these paint markers.

I have an air pump attached, so that will also help dry the paint as we cut.

But, before you do that, make sure you go back into Lightburn and switch the cut line back on and the engraving off.

Now a little strong duct tape will help us get the masking off of our acrylic pieces.

Easy breezy! You can clean this up with a little Novus #2 plastic polish if you need to and they are ready for a magnet!

I like to go in batches, helps keep the work flow flowing.

Now we just need some backing pieces to hold our magnet sets together. Perfect for your logo and again a perfect scrap project!

Slip them in a little cellophane bag and we are ready to sell these! Which is the only thing I had to buy separate along with the magnet, which both are wicked cheap!

How cute are these!? All a little different and all perfectly Stocking sized!

I have no doubt that I am going to be selling out of these in no time.

What’s more is, out of all these magnet designs, all you need to do is put a hole on there and you’ve got yourself a keychain or even some jewelry!

I’d love to know how much you would sell these for! If you make these, try for somewhere around $8-12 and watch them fly off your table like I do!

The next thing I plan on making isn’t to sell – but will help you sell more. Let me explain!

Project 3: Giveaway Gift Tags

Gift tags. Not to sell. To give.

Buy one thing, get one tag. Buy two, get two. And, so on.

Either leverage these to sell more at your table, or surprise your shoppers and leave them wanting to come back!

I cut these from the skinniest scraps I’ve got. Stuff I absolutely would have tossed any other time. Wood does do the best for this project in particular, so people can write directly on the tag.

Since I figure most people will be looking for gifts at my next show, this is such an added bonus.

That’s the whole reason we’re here, right. Two things happen.

You gave them something free and functional, they feel like buying more. And hopefully they add one more ornament pack, keychain or magnet set to unlock the next tag.

Here’s the real added benefit for you though, put your website on there somewhere.

Now it’s functional, and the likeliness your buyer is going to include this with the gift they just bought is high, which means it’s like a guaranteed business card is going to be seen by the recipient.

Heck, throw in a little gift bag and bit of tissue paper and you are the one stop shop customers are going to keep visiting throughout the weekend!

Now, there are a million things you can make, especially when you have a laser that can do it all! Let me know in the comments what you like to make with your scraps!

These classic examples aren’t anything new, but that is usually what tends to sell the best! Especially during this time of year!

People are looking for quick, grab and go, inexpensive finds for coworkers, nieces, neighbors, baristas and more!

So, why not use this shopping trend to use up your scraps, and make some easy profits!
