If I can do it, you can do it BETTER!
From Food Stamps to Six Figures: My 10-Year Laser Cut Jewelry Journey
This isn’t your typical “get rich quick” story. It’s a tale of perseverance, hustle, and a whole lot of laser-cut jewelry. Over the past decade, I’ve built a successful business selling handmade laser-cut jewelry, all while prioritizing time with my family. Here’s a look back at my journey, the ups and downs, and the lessons learned along the way.
Early Struggles and Small Wins (2014-2016):
My laser-cut adventure began in 2014, with a flurry of Etsy listings and a dream of financial independence. Those first few months were slow, but by December, I saw the first glimmers of hope with a few sales. In 2015, the momentum picked up, culminating in a profit of $18,068 – a life-changing amount at the time. This success allowed me to transition to a part-time job, freeing up time to focus on my growing side hustle. By 2016, I was feeling confident enough to open a brick-and-mortar store, though I ultimately closed it in 2018 to focus on online and in-person sales, including participating in conventions.

Finding My Groove and Facing Challenges (2017-2019):
2017 marked a turning point. My laser-cut jewelry business boomed, generating a profit of $52,214 – the most I’d ever made in a single year. I also dipped my toes into Amazon Handmade, a platform that would become a major source of income in the years to come. However, 2018 brought a bit of a setback with the closure of my storefront and a slower year overall. This experience underscored the importance of having a financial safety net, especially when running your own business. Despite the slowdown, I made a strategic move by launching my own website, laying the groundwork for future growth.

A Rollercoaster Year and Unexpected Success (2020):
2020 was a year unlike any other. The pandemic brought convention cancellations and a shift to online sales. Fueled by a creative spark, I designed a pair of toilet paper earrings that resonated with the times. This, combined with a surge in sales on Amazon Handmade (which doubled my income!), led to a record-breaking year with a total profit of $98,747. However, this success came at a personal cost. The year was also marked by my father’s cancer diagnosis and the loss of a close friend.

Reaching Milestones and Taking a Step Back (2021-2023):
With the financial security gained in 2020, I achieved a lifelong dream – purchasing a home for my family. 2021 saw my income cross the six-figure mark, with earnings reaching $107,000. This success continued in 2022, with a record-breaking $128,000 in profits. However, this period of high growth came with a realization – I was sacrificing time with my family in pursuit of ever-increasing income. A turning point came when my son required surgery, highlighting the importance of a healthy work-life balance. In 2023, I made a conscious decision to scale back, focusing on optimizing my existing product catalog and prioritizing family time.

Sharing My Experience and Inspiring Others:
Today, I’m still taking a step back, focusing on a “teaching phase.” Over the years, countless people have expressed interest in starting their own laser-cut businesses. My goal is to share my knowledge and inspire others to take that leap. This journey wasn’t easy. As a single income provider for my family of three, I overcame significant challenges, including homelessness and food stamps.
If I could do it, anyone can! My hope is that by sharing my story, I can empower others to pursue their passions and achieve financial independence.
Looking Ahead:
I’m excited to continue this journey, sharing my experiences through videos and articles. I’ll be diving deep into how I scaled my business, along with strategies for maximizing sales on platforms like Etsy. In the meantime, I’d love to hear about your business journeys!
